The Australian Terrier is a small, low-set, working terrier with a harsh topcoat, a distinct ruff, and a docked or naturally short tail in some countries. The expression is keen, and the ears are erect.

A small, wiry terrier who can share an apartment if walked and given a job; expect some coat work and a ready voice at the door.

The Australian Terrier was developed in Australia from British terrier stock to kill vermin and to serve as a small farm companion. It is one of the smaller working terriers, built for rough ground rather than for a lap only. The AKC and UKC both place it in the Terrier Group.

Temperament

These terriers are confident, busy, and often surprisingly hardy for their size. They are typically affectionate with their household and reserved with strangers. They may chase small animals and will bark to announce visitors.

Training

They learn quickly and will take advantage of soft rules. Keep sessions short, and socialize them with other dogs while they are young.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly and strip or trim the harsh coat a few times a year. Check the ears and keep the furnishings from matting.

Low to moderate.

Health

Australian Terriers may develop patellar luxation, diabetes in some lines, and skin allergies. Keep them lean; extra weight is hard on a small terrier.
