The Silky Terrier is a small, low-set terrier with a long, silky blue-and-tan coat, a wedge head, and small erect V-ears. The outline is longer than tall and the movement is lively.

A small, silky-coated terrier who can share an apartment if walked; daily coat care and a brighter voice than his outline suggests.

The Silky Terrier, or Australian Silky Terrier, was developed in Australia from Yorkshire Terriers and Australian Terriers. It is a companion with ratting instincts. The AKC places it in the Toy Group; the UKC classes it as a Terrier.

Color: Blue and tan; the blue may be silver-blue or slate
Coat: Flat, silky, and about 5–6 inches long; it should not be woolly
Lifespan: 12–15 years

Temperament

Silkies are typically bold, busy, and attached to their people. They can be vocal and may chase small animals. They need more activity than a quiet lap-dog life.

Training

They learn quickly and will take advantage of soft rules. Keep sessions short.

Care and grooming

Brush the long coat several times a week so it does not mat. Many owners keep a shorter clip.

Health

Silky Terriers may develop patellar luxation and Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Keep them lean.
