The Vizsla is a medium, lean pointing dog with a short rust-gold coat, a docked or natural tail, and an elegant, athletic outline. The nose and eye rims match the coat.

A short-coated Hungarian gundog who needs a serious daily run; little grooming, a generally soft voice, and a poor match for a still apartment.

The Vizsla, or Hungarian Pointer, is a versatile gundog from Hungary, used to point and retrieve on land and in water. The AKC places it in the Sporting Group; the UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

Vizslas are typically affectionate, people-oriented, and high-energy. They do poorly when left alone all day. They need field work or long runs, not just a short leash walk.

Training

They learn quickly and are sensitive to harsh methods. Keep sessions short and start bird work early.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat weekly. They feel the cold and need more exercise than their elegant outline suggests.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

Vizslas may develop hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and lymphosarcoma in some lines. Ask breeders about health testing.
